Types of Herbal tea & their health benefits

Herbal teas, unlike other teas which are made from the tea leaf or tea plant, are manufactured from any variety of herbs: fresh flowers, dried flowers, leaves, seeds, or roots. Another reputation for these herbal teas is ‘tisane’ or ‘infusions’. This teas are made by pouring boiling water within the herb of choice and then allowing it to brew for several minutes. If the seeds or root base is used, they are boiled around the stove before used with the boiling water. Should you thought drinking this delicious tea was only for taste, or a warm, low-calorie drink before going to bed, think again! Drinking the right type of tea can offer some serious health benefits.

Besides their relaxing benefit, herbal teas are low in calorie. For academic purpose, herbal tea is not tea but a tea-like beverage that is prepared from an infusion of leaves, bark, seeds and roots. Once extracted in hot water, the benefits of the plants are savoured in a liquefied and easily digestible form. Herbal teas are acknowledged for their ability to calm the senses of tea drinkers.

Green Tea

Made with steamed tea leaves, it has a high concentration of EGCG and has been widely studied. Green tea’s antioxidants may interfere with the growth of bladder, breast, lung, stomach, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers; prevent clogging of the arteries, burn fat, counteract oxidative stress on the brain, reduce risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, reduce risk of stroke, and improve cholesterol levels.

Black Tea

Made with fermented tea leaves, black tea has the highest caffeine content and forms the basis for flavored teas like chai, along with some instant teas. Studies have shown that black tea may protect lungs from damage caused by exposure to cigarette smoke. It also may reduce the risk of stroke.

Lemon Balm Tea

Lemon balm tea is fragrant to drink and is a very effective tonic to calm nerves and anxiety. Cold lemon balm tea bags help relieve cold sores, or genital sores caused by the herpes simplex virus. Mix lemon balm leaves with valerian to treat anxiety, stress and insomnia.  Lemon Balm contains several properties, which control herpes and also regulate the thyroid.
Lemon balm when mixed with peppermint can calm an upset stomach, sooth the digestive track and reduce flatulence. Drink lemon balm tea if you suffer from nerve pain. Drinking lemon balm tea also helps strengthen memory and brain functions and also uplifts one’s mood.

Cardamom Tea

Cardamom is an evergreen plant that’s grown mainly in India and Guatemala. Both dried white cardamom flowers and the three-celled capsules containing 15 to 20 sweetly aromatic seeds are used to make tea.

Cardamom tea has a pungent, sweet and aromatic flavor. Cardamom tea helps treat indigestion, prevents stomach pain, and relieves flatulence. It’s also helpful to drink a glass of cardamom tea if you are feeling nauseous. Cardamom tea fights pulmonary disease where lots of phlegm is present. It also works as a good expectorant and relieves coughs. If you have drunk too many cups of coffee, drink a couple of cups of cardamom tea to help detoxify the caffeine from your system. Drinking a cup of cardamom tea is helpful if you experience mood swings during your menstrual period.
